ADA champions oral health issues in health care reform debate
Posted Nov. 3, 2009

By Craig Palmer

Washington—As the U.S. House of Representatives debated health care reform legislation Nov. 3, the Association urged support for amendments "that will help provide enhanced value for dental patients."

In action alerts to ADA members and e-mail messages to members of Congress, Association leaders urged support for five amendments to legislation offered by Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives.

"While the ADA has not endorsed any of the health care reform bills presently under consideration—including H.R. 3962—we must remain engaged in the legislative process in order to improve these bills," said the ADA member alert from Association President Ron Tankersley and Executive Director Kathleen O'Loughlin. "To do so, we need your help.

"In general, the Association is disappointed that the House missed an opportunity to address some very important oral health issues," said Drs. Tankersley and O'Loughlin. "Nonetheless there are a number of provisions in H.R. 3962 that are consistent with ADA policy and which we are on record supporting."

The action alert and e-mail to members of Congress urge support for five amendments to H.R. 3962 and cite several provisions in the bill "that are consistent with ADA policy and which we are on record supporting."

The ADA's Advocacy content area offers additional information and an opportunity to compose a message to "Your U.S. House Representative." House leaders were planning to take H.R. 3962 to the House floor during the first week of November.
