Leadership Development

Leadership development is important for both individual dentists and for organized dentistry. The ADA Committee on the New Dentist offers member new dentists several opportunities for leadership development that can be applied to one’s community, dental practice, and participation in organized dentistry. Offerings include workshops at the ADA New Dentist Conference, webinars, podcasts and online CE.

To support and cultivate volunteerism within organized dentistry, the ADA has launched the series Understanding Associations on ADA CE Online. This free, members-only leadership development series offers nine modules to provide a foundation for effective leadership involvement in professional associations, and the ADA specifically. The series, developed by the ADA Committee on the New Dentist, offers enhanced leadership development training for current and future tripartite volunteers by outlining key aspects for active members to strengthen leadership skills.

The Understanding Associations series describes the nature, structure and functions of professional associations in general, and of the American Dental Association specifically. Each self-guided module offers comprehensive information and objectives, from identifying your leadership style and conducting effective meetings to setting goals and understanding dentistry’s role in the political process. Participants who successfully complete the series of nine modules will earn three Continuing Education Units.

Module topics include: Associations 101; Effective Leadership; Strategic Planning; Association Committees, Formation and Procedure; Recruitment and Retention; Finances and Budgeting; Communications; Diversity; and Political Action.

Dentists currently active in their associations, and those looking to get involved, are encouraged to go online now and register for this outstanding course. This unique opportunity lays a foundation for leadership that can be useful for years to come.
