2003 Dentist Well-Being
Survey
The report compares various aspects
of male and female dentists’ home and professional lives
as well as their health. Results are presented by gender and
age group on a wide variety of topics from hours spent in religious
activity to time spent on child care.

2002 Survey of New Dentist Financial Issues
Covering those dentists who have graduated within the last ten years, the report includes income, educational debt, and career satisfaction issues for new dentists in private practice as well as those working on dental school faculties; as government or hospital employees; in the armed forces; or in graduate school. In addition to income data, statistics on student loans, loan payments, and employed dentists' contracts are included in the report.

2002 Oral Cancer
Campaign: Dentist and Consumer Surveys
Following the 2001 oral cancer public
service campaign, the ADA Survey Center conducted
surveys of both dentists and consumers to
determine their awareness of oral cancer
and the campaign. The consumers' survey found
that 60.8% of US adults were not aware that
dentists look for oral cancer during a routine
dental exam. Consumers were also asked questions
about their knowledge of oral cancer and
their opinions on receiving a painless test
for the disease.

Survey of Current Issues in Dentistry Series
Based on surveys of national random samples
of dentists. Reports include trend
information and dentists' opinions
on issues affecting dentistry today.
Each report is sold separately and
usually deals with a specific issue.
Reports are published periodically.
2007
- Surgical Dental Implants, Amalgam Restorations, and Sedation. The issues covered in this report include the following: percentage of dentists who have surgically placed a dental implant, average annual number of implants surgically placed by dentists, percentage of dentists participating in formal training for implant dentistry, average number of hours spent in formal implant training, change in the number of patients on whom dentists use amalgam restorations, dentists’ satisfaction with amalgam as a restoration material, and dentists’ use of sedation on their patients. Trend information is available for certain statistics.
2000
- Dentists' Participation in Medicaid Programs. This report presents data by dentists treating and not treating Medicaid patients. Percentages of dentists who treat Medicaid patients is presented by US Census Region. Of those dentists who participate in Medicaid programs, the percentage of their annual gross receipts from Medicaid is reported. Dentists' who would participate in Medicaid programs were the fees raised is also presented.
- Dentists' Computer Use. The issues covered
include the following: dentists' use
of computers and modems at home and at work; plans to purchase
a computer at home or
work; the presence and support of a
networked computer environment; identifying the primary computer
users in dental practices;
identifying the primary functions of
computers in dental practices; access to and use of CD-ROMs;
modem speed; access to, and usage
of, the Internet; presence and purpose
of dentists' web sites; accessing ADA.org; referral of patients
to web sites; desire
to register for ADA Annual Session
online; and registration to receive e-mail from the ADA.
- ADA Seal of Acceptance.
The issues covered in this portion of the survey include the following: sources of information regarding the purchase of dental products; methods and frequency of receiving the ADA Seal of Acceptance list of products; desire to have a list to distribute to patients; and agreement with a statement concerning the influence of the ADA Seal of Acceptance on purchasing decisions.
- Charitable Dental Care.
The issues covered in this portion of the survey
include the following: the population
to which charitable dental care was
provided; average percent rate reduction
offered by practice; estimate of
total annual billings per dentist
for charitable dental care if rate had
not been granted free of charge or
at a discount; and number of patients
treated and hours respondent spent
providing dental care free of charge
in their private practice or in a hospital,
community/public health clinic or
other practice setting in 1999.
- Surgical Dental Implants.
The issues covered in this portion of the survey include the following: the number of dental implants surgically placed over the past five years; the type of each implant placed; the category of each implant placed; and how much time was spent in formal training for implant dentistry in six education categories.
1997
- Repetitive Motion Injuries. Describes the frequency of these injuries among dentists and the work limitations as a result of such injuries. Data on the type of instruments used and frequency of their use is also included.
- Charitable Dental Care. Details
the percentage of dentists who provide
free and discounted dental care to
various population groups as well
as the average annual amount of care
provided per dentist. Data are provided
both nationally and regionally.
- Dentists’ Computer Use. Describes how many dentists use computers, modems, and CD-ROMs in their dental office, internet access and opinions about the internet.
- Dentists’ Efforts to Identify and Prevent Child Abuse. Reports the percentage of dentists trained to identify child abuse and the proportion of dentists that had ever noticed signs of abuse in adolescent patients.
- Tobacco Use Cessation Efforts Among Dentists. Details the frequency that dentists ask their patients about tobacco use, the ways they advise patients about smoking and office policies regarding tobacco use.
- Surgical Dental Implants. Includes historical implant activity by dentists as well as the types and categories of implants placed. Information on the number of hours that dentists’ spend in implant training is also included
1995
- Treatment of Long-Term Care Facility Patients. Describes dentists who treat patients in various types of long-term care facilities, use of auxiliary personnel at facilities, and equipment used at the facilities.
- Dentists’ Retirement Savings. Discusses the amount, percentage, and types of retirement investments dentists make, reports some data by age and gender.
- ADA Seal Program. Details dentists’ use of the ADA Seal in purchasing dental supplies, discusses their opinions and knowledge of the Seal program.
- Dentists’ Opinions on Dental Issues. Includes data on opinions about organized dentistry, dental publications, practice management, training to detect child abuse, needs of female patients, and local dentistry.
- Oral Cancer Detection in the Dental Office. Describes the percentage of dentists who have seen patients with oral lesions, oral cancer, and their responses to such patients.
- Tax Deductions. Provides data on the percentage of dentists who have claimed tax deductions for health insurance costs.
1994
- Hypertension Screening and Hospital Privileges. Reports findings on the prevalence of hypertension screening by private practitioners. Data on the percentage of general practitioners and specialists who have hospital privileges is also included.
- Membership Issues. Reasons why dentists remain ADA members and the most important member benefits are explored. Dentists’ opinions about issues facing the dental profession are also examined.

Survey of State Dental Programs in Medicaid
Provides current information about state dental Medicaid programs, including number of enrollees, types of beneficiaries, and number of active dentists enrolled as providers. Also includes services included in state dental Medicaid programs; co-payment, reimbursement, and claim information; additions, deletions, and revisions to coverage in state dental Medicaid programs; and pending legislation and effects of national legislation on state dental Medicaid programs.

1999 Dental Management Service Organization Survey
Focuses on dentists employed by Dental Management Service Organizations (DMSOs). The percentage of all employed dentists who are employed by DMSOs is reported by dentists' age and gender. Experiences of DMSO-employed dentists are detailed in the report as well as the reasons dentists sold their practices to DMSOs. Responding dentists' opinions concerning their satisfaction with their DMSO experience is also reported.

Survey of Dentists
Summarizes responses of independent general practitioners about the characteristics of their practice. The 1993 version contains descriptive information about dental hygienists and chairside assistants employed in these practices, key data including: salaries, benefits, and procedures performed by each group. The 1995 version contains descriptive information on male and female dentists personal and family issues and work-related issues.
1999 Survey of Career Patterns
- A Comparison of Dentists by Gender and Age Group. The report provides information on both male and female practicing dentists in four different age groups. Included in the report are data on dentists’ incomes, satisfaction with their profession, and participation in contractual agreements with third parties along with many other types of information.
- A Report on Retirement Preparation and Planning. Report focuses on dentists' planned age at retirement and their feeling of preparedness for the event. Includes breakdowns by age group (under 40 and 40 and older) and gender.
1995 Survey of Dentists: A Comparison of Male and Female Dentists.
Contains separate reports on the following topics:
- Personal and Family Related Issues. Discusses dentists' time spent away from work. Leisure activities, children, spouses (and their occupations) are detailed.
- Work-Related Issues. Describes dentists' practice patterns, incomes, and other work-related issues.
1993 Survey of Dentists
- Selected Results From the 1996 Members Needs and Opinion Survey. Details member dentists' ratings of challenges facing the practice of dentistry and their primary reason for continuing their ADA membership. Includes responses to opinion statements and information on where member dentists obtain various products and services.
- Selected Results From the 1996 Nonmember Opinion Survey. Details nonmembers' responses to questions about the challenges facing dentistry and opinion statements about the ADA. Includes reasons for not joining the ADA and information about how they were recruited by the ADA.
- Selected Results From the 1996 Past Member Survey. Includes past members' responses to opinion statements and challenges facing their practices. Explores past members' reasons for not renewing ADA membership.

1998 Survey of
New Dentists on Impact of Student Debt
Covers the level of debt incurred by students in both public and private schools;
students' average monthly payments on this debt; and their use of alternative
strategies to help them manage their debt. Responding dentists were also asked
to estimate the financial impact they believed student debt would have on them
over the next ten years.

Report on Dentists' Participation
in Capitation and Preferred Provider Plans in 1998
Report covers the percentage of dentists' patients participating in Capitation
and Preferred Provider dental plans; dentists' reasons for non-participation;
and the effect of the plans on dental practices. The report also covers dentists'
likelihood of renewing participation in the plan when their current contract
expires and their level of satisfaction with Capitation and Preferred Provider
dental plans.

1993 Survey of Infection
Control and OSHA Compliance Costs
Estimates of various costs associated with infection control procedures in private
practices. Includes information on impact of infection control costs on dental
fees. Appendix includes report to the 1994 ADA House of Delegates summarizing
data from the study and detailing total national costs of infection control.
Tables present the impact of compliance with OSHA Standard on Occupational Exposure
to Bloodborne Pathogens, "before and after" OSHA costs, and detailed
costs of dental supplies, housekeeping, personal protective equipment, laundry/cleaning,
infection control planning, training and record-keeping, hand-piece sterilization,
staff vaccinations, waste disposal, and changes in engineering and staff.
